Description

Get students hyped about solving linear equations while planning the purchase of their first car! Drive into a real world math activity that students can connect to their personal need for transportation. This low prep math activity is a win-win for students and teachers alike.

The First Car Mastery Task guides students in using variables, tables, and equations to calculate and analyze the purchase price, the value, and depreciation of their first car.  Students will discover the value of negative integers and the use of equations to solve linear equations in a real world context.

Included with this product:

  1. Instructions for Teachers
  2. Worksheets for Students
  3. 12 Answer Keys
  4. First Car Mastery Car Extension Task
  5. 3 Additional extension ideas for advanced and high school students

Students will love demonstrating their individuality as they shop and plan for their first car. You will enjoy watching the student-led instruction and learning that takes place through student inquiry.

Preparation is a cinch! Just copy and go. All eleven answer keys have been consolidated into one master key for quick checks along the way. Just sit back and enjoy the ride!

Students will:

  • Research new cars
  • Choose a car to purchase and record the information
  • Create equations to represent both car value and depreciation
  • Construct a table to represent the value of the car over time
  • Find depreciation by solving linear equations
  • Determine when the car has reached its scrap value

Students will imagine purchasing their first car. They will research new cars available at this time and their prices. Each student must choose a car that is being sold for between 30 and 40 thousand dollars. The student will then use the task worksheet to guide them through the purchase, depreciation, and eventual sale of the vehicle. Teachers need to provide the worksheet which is included in the purchase of this task and an avenue to research to choose a car. My students do this research online.

This task is appropriate for use with upper level middle school students and any level of high school students. Students should already know how to multiply with rational numbers. This project takes one to two hours to complete based on student mathematics level. It is easy to split into shorter lessons or break it up for use within a full unit on systems.

My site will remain in full distance learning for the rest of the school year. So this resource was a great way to engage my algebra students and they were all surprised at their findings representing a real world situation.

It ended up being a little too complicated for my kiddos comprehension level, but the activity itself was great. Well planned out, visually appealing, engaging, and a necessary life skill to understand.
