Description

Solving Linear Equations with variables on both sides using the Distributive Property Math Coloring Activity Algebra Math Wall.

Students will solve linear equations, including equations whose solutions require expanding expressions using the distributive property and collecting like terms.

For example, solving 2(x - 3) = 3x - 16

Notes:

There are 20 questions on solving linear equations.

Each answer occurs twice, once with a number and once with a color.

The matching color can then be used to color the picture in a color by number activity.

The resource is printed in black and white for the students to color in.

All answers are included.

Contents:

This resource includes:

  • One worksheet with 20 questions on solving multi-step linear equations with variables on both sides with and without the distributive property.
  • One answer key sheet for students to fill in.
  • One color by number picture for students to color in.
  • Teachers notes.
  • All answers.

Objectives:

This resource has been designed to practice:

  • Solving multi-step linear equations with variables on both sides with and without the distributive property.
  • Expanding expressions using the distributive property.
  • Collecting like terms.

Directions:

Print out the 3 pages for each student:

  • the sheet of questions
  • the coloring answer key
  • the coloring picture

Suggestions:

Students can cut out their completed pictures and use them to make a classroom display.

Use variables to represent quantities in a real-world or mathematical problem, and construct simple equations and inequalities to solve problems by reasoning about the quantities.
Solve word problems leading to equations of the form 𝘱𝘹 + 𝘲 = 𝘳 and 𝘱(𝘹 + 𝘲) = 𝘳, where 𝘱, 𝘲, and 𝘳 are specific rational numbers. Solve equations of these forms fluently. Compare an algebraic solution to an arithmetic solution, identifying the sequence of the operations used in each approach. For example, the perimeter of a rectangle is 54 cm. Its length is 6 cm. What is its width?
Solve linear equations in one variable.
