Description

This set of 8th grade math (pre-algebra) binder notes provides guided notes for solving systems of linear equations using substitution. Students will be given a 3-step process for solving using this method. Then, there are 3 "guided examples", giving 3 different scenarios where x is isolated, y is isolated, and when y is isolated in both equations. Students will then practice these types of problems, given 4 independent practice problems. On the back side, there is a guided example to show students what to do when a variable is not isolated in either equation, again, with independent practice on this skill. The last section provides students with notes and practice on the "special" cases, in which the system has no solution or infinitely many solutions.

Awesome notes! They are easy to follow and flow well. They did not confuse students as some can.

Analyze and solve pairs of simultaneous linear equations.
Understand that solutions to a system of two linear equations in two variables correspond to points of intersection of their graphs, because points of intersection satisfy both equations simultaneously.
Solve systems of two linear equations in two variables algebraically, and estimate solutions by graphing the equations. Solve simple cases by inspection. For example, 3š˜¹ + 2š˜ŗ = 5 and 3š˜¹ + 2š˜ŗ = 6 have no solution because 3š˜¹ + 2š˜ŗ cannot simultaneously be 5 and 6.
