Solving Math With Words

This resource is an excellent activity to challenge your students in math. The students are challenged to answer particular math questions with words and not use the typical models or algorithms. To me, this is important to develop students communication, analyzation, and descriptive skills for math class. This will translate to a better and deeper understanding of the content and topics of math. This resource is geared towards upper elementary math classrooms. This would include fourth grade, fifth grade, and sixth grade. These assessments are a great way to create math discourse in your math classrooms.

Solving Math with Words will help your elementary math class in many ways:

*Math solving skills

*Math discourse

*Math talk with small groups

*Problem solving skills

*Vocabulary usage

*Communication to teacher and other students

*Process analysis

*Writing skills

I use this resource to help my students transition from answering modeling problems and algorithms. It is a challenge for them at first, but they quickly build enough confidence in themselves and they are quickly successful.

Standards

to see state-specific standards (only available in the US).
Understand the concept of a ratio and use ratio language to describe a ratio relationship between two quantities. For example, “The ratio of wings to beaks in the bird house at the zoo was 2:1, because for every 2 wings there was 1 beak.” “For every vote candidate A received, candidate C received nearly three votes.”
Understand the concept of a unit rate 𝘢/𝘣 associated with a ratio 𝘢:𝘣 with 𝘣 ≠ 0, and use rate language in the context of a ratio relationship. For example, “This recipe has a ratio of 3 cups of flour to 4 cups of sugar, so there is 3/4 cup of flour for each cup of sugar.” “We paid $75 for 15 hamburgers, which is a rate of $5 per hamburger.”
Use ratio and rate reasoning to solve real-world and mathematical problems, e.g., by reasoning about tables of equivalent ratios, tape diagrams, double number line diagrams, or equations.
