Description

In this digital 6th Grade Math Solving One Step Equations Curriculum Unit Bundle, students practice solving one-step linear equations using addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. The emphasis is on the transition from a cool, visual backtracking model with reverse operations to the traditional algorithm (balancing both sides of the equation). Great for all students including visual learners and Special Ed (those with IEPs), this interactive activity on solving 1 step equations contains positive rational numbers - fractions and decimals. Hence, it's for Sixth Grade Math, but also great for 7th Grade and Middle School Math Equations review.

  • This activity bundle has 6 lesson activities. For starting out with only the one step equations using adding/subtracting bundle, click HERE. For only the one step using multiplying/dividing bundle, click HERE.

  • This one-step equations unit activity curriculum bundle scaffolds the learning. It is great for students with IEPs (special education students), struggling learners, and all students. The backwards model is a visual tool and is a game-changer for teaching equations.

  • There is built-in feedback so that students can monitor their own learning. They engage in error analysis, free response (where you can see their work step by step on the teacher portal).

  • They self-assess their own learning at the end, which research shows strongly impacts learning (John Hattie).

  • Embedded in the activity is a video that demonstrates the new model for students, where they can pause as needed and take notes.

  • There is also a teacher dashboard that indicates for the teacher whether students accurately solved the problems in real-time. Then you can pull small groups, whether in person or through break out zoom meetings, which has potential to address students' misconceptions or gaps.

  • If you are able to front-load and solidify the model (shown in this activity) with your students beforehand, it will have potential to boost student learning. The backtracking method can eventually lead to the algorithm of balancing both sides of the equation.

  • Also great as a middle school equations review activity - for 7th Grade and 8th Grade remediation - response to intervention equations activity.

  • The dashboard shows the entire class - all students - while also showing their correctness at the same time. Progress monitoring data are essential in order to drive decisions around whether students are meeting the standards and learning goals, all while students are engaging in some fun!

  • Desmos is a free and user-friendly platform. Help your students have fun while engaging in mathematics. Pull students in breakout rooms or small groups to support struggling learners!
