Description

This slideshow discussed the following different methods to solve a quadratic equation and when it is best to use each method:

1) Graphing

2) Factoring (using the T-Chart Method of Factoring)

3) Completing the Square

4) The Quadratic Formula

Before each method, the students will be given a Quadratic equation and asked to solve it using whichever method they believe is best. Once they have had an opportunity to solve, the next slide will show an appropriate method. It will discuss when it is best to use that method and how to solve using that particular method.

The last slide can be made into a worksheet that students can work on independently. I would recommend also assigning the students a letter from A-J and ask them to solve that particular equation using the method they choose. Once everyone has completed their equation, have the students get with their partner (or group) and discuss the method used to solve in order to see if they used the same method to get the solution(s).

Explain each step in solving a simple equation as following from the equality of numbers asserted at the previous step, starting from the assumption that the original equation has a solution. Construct a viable argument to justify a solution method.
Solve quadratic equations in one variable.
Use the method of completing the square to transform any quadratic equation in 𝘹 into an equation of the form (𝘹 – 𝘱)Β² = 𝘲 that has the same solutions. Derive the quadratic formula from this form.
