Description

This set of number sense problems contains 15 equations at a 7th Grade level. Students practice balancing equations containing addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Each of the 15 problems are the perfect combination of worksheet and guided math talks.

The best part - no math anxiety for students! Students are given blank circles and fill in each with a different number. They then check their work for balanced numbers and retry if necessary. Students who excel at math love the freedom and challenge. Students who struggle in math class engage with these number sense routines without anxiety associated with typical math practice.

Example use:

Whole group:

  • Post a problem of the day at the front of the room.
  • Allow students to problem solve on individual white boards for 2-6 minutes.
  • Discuss answers, comparing different answers from various students.

Small group:

  • Divide a class into small groups.
  • Give groups a problem and a whiteboard.
  • Allow groups to attempt the problem 2-6 minutes.
  • Discuss problem solving techniques to wrap up.

Walk-the-Room Activity:

  • Print slides and hang problems around the room.
  • Give students whiteboards.
  • Allow students to rotate around the room and solve each problem.

Individual Warm Up or Exit Ticket:

  • Print the handouts.
  • Give one handout to each student.
  • Allow students to solve the problem before they turn in.

Each problem provides structure instructional opportunities that increase students' growth mindset and problem solving endurance in a format similar to logic puzzles.

Not just for 7th Grade, each problem is a clearly constructed challenge. Students below 6th Grade needing higher difficultly benefit from these problems because they provide accessible challenges without teacher intervention. Students who need review or remediation find a workable problem that scaffolds up to a new concept.

Apply properties of operations as strategies to add, subtract, factor, and expand linear expressions with rational coefficients.
Use variables to represent quantities in a real-world or mathematical problem, and construct simple equations and inequalities to solve problems by reasoning about the quantities.
Solve word problems leading to equations of the form 𝘱𝘹 + 𝘲 = 𝘳 and 𝘱(𝘹 + 𝘲) = 𝘳, where 𝘱, 𝘲, and 𝘳 are specific rational numbers. Solve equations of these forms fluently. Compare an algebraic solution to an arithmetic solution, identifying the sequence of the operations used in each approach. For example, the perimeter of a rectangle is 54 cm. Its length is 6 cm. What is its width?
