"Great resource, The color illustrations to support the word problems are very helpful for students with limited vocabularies. The charts allow for connections to the world and teach students how to process the information in a word problem while learning the math specific vocabulary."

Description

The 3 read protocol is a useful strategy to teach students to think about what word problems are asking. Think about it as a close read of a math story! Students analyze what is happening in a word problem rather than rushing to solve it without understanding the story. This strategy is highly effective for English language learners because of the visuals and the deep analysis of a math story. The students also need to inquire about the story and create their own questions. It is very engaging for students because they are the ones who have created the questions.

This resource includes 11 story problems (each has at least two options for differentiation). Each story problem has a recording sheet included, vocabulary cards, picture cards, and picture manipulatives that match each story.

This 3 reads resource has many color visuals. If you do not have a color printer, then you can print them in black and white, and you can show the pictures from the PDF on your computer. Color is important for those English language learners. When you print the pictures, laminate them, so they will last a long time.
