Description
RECENTLY UPDATED!! This product now contains two complete sets of manipulatives with a corresponding powerpoint and a worksheet for student practice. One set is an introduction to using and solving formulas (volume, circumference, distance, perimeter and interest) and the second set contains more difficult formula manipulations (Newton's law of gravitation, area of a trapezoid, average acceleration of an object, surface area of a rectangular prism, surface area of a cone, and temperature). Mix and match the two sets to your needs and liking!
COMMON CORE ALIGNED! Solving and Using Formulas provides you with the tools you need to teach students how to solve and use formulas as an engaging, hand’s on lesson. Students begin this lesson by cutting out pieces of paper (letters and operations) that they will use to manipulate formulas. The teacher can then use the provided powerpoint of problems to have students use their manipulatives to solve formulas for different variables. A practice worksheet and answer key are also provided as a means of further practice and solidifying understanding. Students are required to plug values into the manipulated formulas to find the value of the variable that was solved for on the worksheet. I use this in my class and it has been very helpful when teaching this concept that students often find challenging.
Included in this download:
- 2 formula manipulative sets
- 2 Practice Using Manipulatives powerpoint (includes practice problem and solution slides)
- 2 Solving and Using Formulas Worksheet (answer keys included)

Good
really helpful hands on activity for my special ed students
I used these for a high school class. The students enjoyed the activity but many of the problems were too much of the same type. It would have been better had there been more of a variety in problem types.
I appreciate your constructive feedback Trina. I have updated the product to include a variety of problem types, please see the updated description. Re-downloading the product will get you the updated version. I would be grateful if you would consider updating your rating and comment once you have had a chance to use/look over the newest version. I am always looking for ways to improve my products. Thank you!

Rearrange formulas to highlight a quantity of interest, using the same reasoning as in solving equations. For example, rearrange Ohm’s law 𝘝 = 𝘭𝘙 to highlight resistance 𝘙.
