Description
These notes introduce AP® English Literature, dual enrollment, and advanced literature students to poetry terms needed to analyze poetry on an advanced level. These notes are newly aligned to Unit 2 (Poetry I) of the revised AP® Lit CED. The notes define each term, provide several examples from real lines of published poems, then presents a full poem for student practice. These materials are both printable and available for use digitally. Several guiding questions for critical thinking and discussion are included with each poem.
This presentation defines the following terms:
- Alliteration
- Consonance
- Assonance
- Repetition
- Anaphora
- Onomatopoeia
- Enjambment
- Caesura
- Juxtaposition
- Open vs. Closed forms of poetry
A detailed handout is included for student note-taking purposes. The file also includes a teacher's guide to assist with the slideshow notes as well as suggested poem titles if expansion is needed. The notes and handout have also been merged into an interactive Google Slides presentation where students can record their responses on Google Classroom and other distance learning platforms.
This resource was recently updated to reflect the 2019 AP® Lit course description changes. It focuses on the following AP® Lit Essential Skills, which align with Unit 2 of the CED (Poetry I):
CHR 1.A - Identify and describe what specific textual details reveal about a character, that character’s perspective, and that character’s motives.
STR 3.C – Explain the function of structure in a text.
STR 3.D – Explain the function of contrasts within a text.
FIG 5.B – Explain the function of specific words and phrases in a text.
FIG 6.A – Identify and explain the function of a simile.
FIG 6.B – Identify and explain the function of a metaphor.
