Description
A fun alternative spring unit! Students will be engaged in the project based learning process as they question, research, plan, improve and present their projects. They will study what it takes to make a kite by learning the function of all the parts through research and printables.
Students will learn about what it takes to make a kite fly. Links to videos on how to make kites and cool kite flying will engage students and peak curiosity.
Students will plan their kite design and build with simple everyday materials that the teacher will provide. Paper, bamboo sticks, surveyor's tape, string, and a few other basics are all that is required.
There are no "worksheets" but all the planning is done for you. All you have to do is print, facilitate and watch your students enjoy learning.
Rubric and FLIPBOOK are also provided.
Planning Guide:
1. Questioning~ You can start this in a variety of ways.
I have provided some question cards that you can present to your students.
I have also provided two blank cards so that students can generate their own questions (laminate and use dry erase markers for future use).
You can start with the close reading text provided.
You can start by showing one of the videos or reading from one of the links provided:
2. Researching~ Introduce the reading passage (which can be used for close, repeated readings). Students will find out some information about kites in the text. Research cards are provided to explain the parts of a kite and purpose of those parts. Also included are links and QR codes to pages that will help students find out more about kites.
3. Planning~ Students will complete their plans using the planning sheets that they already have.
4. Creating ~ Students will gather the materials that they need to make their kites. They can watch video again if needed. Then students will create their kites.
5. Improving ~This is a testing phase of the student product. Take your class out to the nearest football or baseball field on a windy day and test the kites.
6. Present ~ Students will present their kites to the class.
Ways to facilitate:
Students can create a drawing and description using “My Kite” printable that has been edited after improvements.
Students can create a magazine advertisement (a template is included but they can do from scratch as well.
Students can make an infomercial if classroom has recording capabilities.
Students can give oral presentation.

My students loved it. It was very engaging for the end of the year. Thanks!
This was a very helpful addition to my end of the year Kite STEM unit.
This was a really fun unit. We didn't use every component but the background info on kites was super
helpful. My students read the passage and were super excited to start creating their kite!
This was a great reading passage to the lite lesson I do at the end of the year. It connects to the culture focus and gives them something fun to do I. The last week of school.
great resource
