Description

No prep lesson using a guided notes graphic organizer approximating square roots of non-perfect squares, rational & irrational numbers. Students estimate square roots and graph the approximation on a number line. Students determine two consecutive integers when squared includes their number, use a range to create a fraction, convert the fraction to a decimal and graph their estimation on the number line. Use the first two pages as guided notes and the additional pages as independent practice, bell ringers, exit tickets or a quick quiz.

Learning Focus:

  • approximate the value of a non-perfect square and locate the value on a number line.
  • convert fractions to decimals
  • round decimals to the nearest hundredth

Use rational approximations of irrational numbers to compare the size of irrational numbers, locate them approximately on a number line diagram, and estimate the value of expressions (e.g., π²). For example, by truncating the decimal expansion of √2, show that √2 is between 1 and 2, then between 1.4 and 1.5, and explain how to continue on to get better approximations.
