Structured Math Lesson: Visual Addition to 5

Use the Google Slides lesson for small group or 1:1 instruction. Students will practice counting with 1:1 correspondence to 5, putting together 2 groups to count a sum, transitioning from pictorial representation (pictures of strawberries on an addition mat) to abstract representation (vertical addition equation). This math lesson uses simple visual structure and color-coding combined with with engaging and practical animated pictorial representations of food to support students that need structure and systematic instruction to access academic content.

  • Google Slides lesson:
    • "First, Next, Then" card to communicate the structure of the lesson (3 slides)
    • Animated counting to 5 with numeral identification practice (5 slides)
    • 10 animated addition problems with sums to 5 (20 slides)

  • 2 Leveled Boom Cards™ decks*
    • Both decks contain the same set of 10 visual addition problems with sums to 5
    • 1 deck with errorless answer choices for sums
    • 1 deck with field of 2 answer choices for sums
    • Including drag and drop answers and audio directions

How to use?

Use the Google Slides lesson in present to progress through a small group or 1:1 lesson introducing or reviewing the concept of addition. Slides are animated to support the concepts of counting with 1:1 correspondence, putting groups together to add, and recognizing that groups of objects are represented by numerals. Depending on individual student needs, you may progress through 5 addition problem sets and then take a break or progress through all 10 addition problem sets in one lesson--just drag the the "First, Next, Then" card where you need it.

Following the lesson, assign the Boom Cards decks for independent or repeated practice. The Boom Cards decks maintain the same visual structure, color-coding, and engaging food pictorial representations.

*To use Boom Cards, you must be connected to the Internet. Boom Cards play on modern browsers (Chrome, Safari, Firefox, and Edge). Apps are available for modern Android, iPads, iPhones, and Kindle Fires. For security and privacy, adults must have a Boom Learning account to use and assign Boom Cards. You will be able to assign the Boom Cards you are buying with "Fast Pins," (a form of play that gives instant feedback to students for self-grading Boom Cards).
