Description

This reading toolkit is packed with student-friendly reading goals and learning targets designed to help you plan with intention. Whether you're launching a new reading unit, setting up strategy groups, or differentiating instruction, this resource gives you everything you need to keep your reading lesson plans focused and purposeful.

If you’re like me, you know that all students are unique in their reading learning needs. Even though you may teach the same reading minilesson to your whole class, the real magic happens in small groups and one-on-one conferences. That’s where targeted support matters most—and where this resource can make a big difference.

Best practice tells us that students are far more likely to reach a learning goal if they know what the goal is. These reading goal bookmarks and mini-lesson tools help make those goals visible, concrete, and actionable—for you and your students.

What’s Included:

  • Over 50 clear, specific reading learning targets grouped by skill
  • Instructional notes and background information to help you plan your whole group or small group reading instruction
  • Each goal comes in:
    • A full-page version for display or group lessons
    • A set of 3 bookmarks (full color + black/white for easy printing) for students to use and reflect on their growth
    • Google slides to seamlessly add to your plans or to project

Skill Categories Covered:

  • How I sound when I read (fluency/accuracy) – 7 targets
  • How I stay focused when I read (reading habits) – 7 targets
  • How I monitor myself when I read (metacognition) – 5 targets
  • How I comprehend informational texts – 9 targets
  • How I comprehend fiction texts – 13 targets
  • How I share my ideas about reading (oral/written responses) – 10 targets

Each section features its own color-coded design to make planning easier and more organized.

Suggestions for Use:

  • Project the full-page targets during reading mini-lessons
  • Use in small group binders for quick access to just-right goals
  • Print bookmarks for students to track progress or glue into notebooks
  • Use bookmarks in assignment notebooks to keep families in the loop
  • Reference black-and-white goal lists for planning reading instruction or mapping out small group focus areas

Whether you're trying to differentiate reading instruction, set meaningful goals, or create reading lesson plans that stick—this resource helps make those goals come alive.
