Description

Subitizing matching game will give students the opportunity to subitize using multiple different materials such as tally mark cards, ten frame dot cards, and domino cards. This game can be played with a partner and/or put in a math bin for math stations or used in a Guided Math bin. I model this game whole group and then have students play it a couple of times before putting it in bins where they are 100% independent. Lay out the numeral cards in order, while turning all the other cards face down. Students will take turns drawing a card and subiizing; their goal is to try to see a group within the total amount that allows them to count on in order to discover the total a lot quicker than coating one-to-one. Once the student subitizes the total amount, they lay that card underneath the numeral in which it represents. Their partner needs to check their work. If correct, then it is the next player's turn. Continue until all the cards are under the correct numeral.

I do not put in all the cards at once. I typically include the numeral cards, ten frame dot cards, and tally mark cards first. Then I interchange some with the domino cards, eventually adding all the cards to the game once students are able to handle the challenge!
