Description

days worth of number strings geared to the third grade subtraction skills. Number Strings are research-based Number Talks that have shown to improve number sense and mathematical fluency. This resource can be used as a tier 1 daily routine or as intervention for older students. I have used this resource in grades 2-6 to improve number sense and operational accuracy. Can be used with other number sense routines to further enhance number sense!
This can be a short unit OR used as intervention in small groups with students who lack operational number sense. Has also been used as a bell ringer! Kids often learn the standard algorithm and then forget to think about what they are doing!
2nd grade Subtraction Skills:
Skill 1: Subtract a one- or two-digit number from a two-digit number, without renaming.
Skill 2: Subtract a one-digit number from a two-digit number of 20 or more, with renaming
Skill 3: Subtract a two-digit number from a two digit number of 20 or more, with renaming
3rd grade Subtraction Skills:
Skill 1: Subtract a two- or three-digit number from a three-digit number, without renaming
Skill 2: Subtract a two or three-digit number from a three-digit number, with renaming from tens to ones and hundreds to tens
4th Grade Subtraction Skill:
Subtract a three-digit number from a four-digit number, with renaming from tens to ones, hundreds to tens, and thousands to hundreds
Standards:
Mathematical Practices K-6
2nd, 3rd, and 4th grade subtraction standards
Anticipated Strategies:
-Compensating
-Adding on to subtract
-Making Tens
-Place Value
-Standard Algorithm
-Doubling
-Counting All/ Counting on
-Counting Back/ Removal
***The idea for this product originated in my master's thesis project in which I worked to improve the number sense of my students. This has shown to help with Acadience Math Computation as well as overall operational fluency, mathematical reasoning, and discourse.
