NOW PART OF A BUNDLE

Five and Tens Frame Addition and Subtraction Bundle

This resource is primarily aimed at Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten age group as it relates to subtraction to 10 and writing subtraction sentences using a Tens Frame.

Content:

• Teacher Notes

• All Task Cards are also on PowerPoint – 55 Slides

• PowerPoint Demo Lesson

• 55 Subtraction Task Cards - PDF

PowerPoint Slides - Task Cards

The cards are on PowerPoint Slides so you have the option of changing the colour of the counters and also moving the slides around.

You can do this activity as a whole class. Hand out whiteboards and dry erase pens.

Ask students to work out the first subtraction sum.

Ask what did they do first? How did they write the taking away sum?

PowerPoint Demonstration (6 Slides) on how to use the task cards

This presentation shows students how to go about writing and working out the subtraction sums.

There are 6 slides which show step-by-step how to use the task cards.

Before you show the next stage, you could ask students ‘What do you do next?’ before showing the next step.

Ask the students to count the counters/dots as they appear in the animation.

Ask students how many counters are crossed when the animation has crossed through the counters/dots.

Get the students to say how many counters are left before revealing the answer.

55 Subtraction Task Cards (PDF)

Print out the task cards and laminate. These can be used in small group sessions or as part of a whole lesson.

After showing the demo on how to use the task cards, students can practise writing taking sums.

Make it clear to the students that they must count all the counters on the tens frame, the big number, and write this down. Then count the counters with the crosses which shows they have been taken away. You could even cover up the counters with crosses with a blank sheet of paper show demonstrate they have been taken away.

The counters that are left uncrossed or not covered up should be counted to give the final answer.
