Included are four exit tickets, an assessment for subtraction word problems, and a CUBS strategy mini anchor chart. I used the CUBS strategy to solve subtraction word problems with my first graders and saw great success! Throughout the week I introduced different steps of the strategy to ensure that my students had a deep understanding of implementing the strategy. The strategy includes:

C- circle the numbers

U- underline the question

B- box clue words

S- solve the problem

I began by introducing clue words, then by have students write the number sentence after doing the first three steps (CUB), then finally putting it all together and solving the problem.
