Description

This lesson plan for Swim Fish: Explore the Coral Reef, by National Geographic Kids, has the following components:

  • in depth instructions (both a colored quick key point lesson plan, scripted and EZ print lesson plan, and ready to use materials!)
  • vocab
  • phonemic connection (syllabication and verbs)
  • Independent and whole group reading
  • scaffolding (making inference)
  • comprehension activity (verbal discussion and KWL activity)
  • writing prompt
  • book wrap up
  • bonus activity page

Once students become more or less proficient with basic word families and sounds (CVC, blends, vowel teams, etc.), I use quality stories (fiction and non-fiction early readers, picturebooks, chapter books) to help them engage with literacy. All sections, of course, can be used independently of one another or all together. If all components are used the lesson will be approximately 45-60 minutes. These lesson plans are designed for small groups, but could easily be adapted for a classroom literacy block. No prep needed!

GRL estimate: G 178+ words

Still unsure? Try my free lesson plan for an Elephant and Piggie book: https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/My-Friend-is-Sad-lesson-plan-10204572. (This resource is very similar and matches the same format in the Academic Theory Stuff section.)

I believe in the science of reading!
