Stink and the Incredible Super Galactic Jawbreaker Lesson

The Incredible Super-Galactic Jawbreaker, by Megan McDonald, is a fantastic first chapter book for readers who have mastered all basic phonemic skills to read 1-2 syllable words, ready to tackle triple syllable words and longer texts. Most comprehension questions are straightforward, as this is designed for struggling or new readers who cannot be rushed into complex structures yet. The main elements in this resource are: vocabulary words, syllable divisions, discussion questions, a bit of design

Letter Reversals a c e f g h j k m n r u y

Often students know most letter directions, yet it’s not uncommon for that one letter to be a constant confusable. A helpful trick is to find the letter or image hidden inside of the confusables. Another trick is to create a mini characterization of the letter with alliteration. There are instructions along with posters (same pictures as the mini poster). I have successfully used this with students with dyslexia and dysgraphia. Please note that I have other reversal products below. This resource

Schwa Poster

The schwa is but one of many frustrations of the English language. When sounds go lazy, the grapheme no longer matches the phoneme, leading to frustration. One way to ease frustration is for students to hunt for lazy sounds in words. This resource provides a poster of a schwa in a beach chair sipping lemonade, taking a break. There also small schwa’s to attach to a list or turn into a magnet. This is original artwork and may not be sold or repurposed outside of this resource. Thank you.

Little Red Hen writing prompts and activities

This resource differs greatly from my other lesson plans in that it is a collection of writing prompts and activities centering around the folktale The Little Red Hen, but not a specific retelling. There are so many great versions of The Little Red Hen out there! In some, the animals live together and others they reside in the farmyard. In some retellings, the Red Hen character bakes a cake and others bread. Some versions end in laziness while others end in productivity. The list goes on! Most

Silent ghost letters poster

Silent letters are of many confusions and frustrations when learning English. This is a fun poster to help remember/reference the silent letters: gn, kn, gh, wr, mb, and silent e. Most of these combinations used to say their corresponding sound, but over time have dropped off. (Note: this resource does not give an in-depth history.) I believe in the science of reading!

Blend Word Builder

A common literacy game is finding the missing letters and sounds. I love Zingo Word Builder and What’s Gnu. However, when my students move beyond CVC words, they still want to play the game! After much wanting, I have made a blend board that can be used with tactile letters of your choosing ( Zingo letters, magnetic alphabet, letter tiles, etc.). Note, only two letter blends are used. (I suggest printing two game boards per page. Decide if you want to keep as one sheet or individual strips.) B

Simple Sentence Corrections dictation

This sentence correction activity focuses on early readers/spellers who learn through the science of reading. The corrections are meant to be easy and must be done with an auditory component. The errors will always consist of: beginning capitalization, ending punctuation, and the missing sound. The missing sounds are represented by dashes and correspond to the focused section. The correct sentences are at the end of each section (which could be used for dictation as well). All sight words used

Additional biographical information

I have been teaching since 2015. Many of those years I have (and still am) taught K-5 intervention, covering basic math skills, phonics, comprehension, writing, spelling, and the science of reading. I am a firm believer of hand-on and creative teaching. And phonics… it has to be phonics!
