The schwa is but one of many frustrations of the English language. When sounds go lazy, the grapheme no longer matches the phoneme, leading to frustration. One way to ease frustration is for students to hunt for lazy sounds in words. This resource provides a poster of a schwa in a beach chair sipping lemonade, taking a break. Silent letters are of many confusions and frustrations when learning English. This is a fun poster to help remember/reference the silent letters: gn, kn, gh, wr, mb, and silent e. Most of these combinations used to say their corresponding sound, but over time have dropped off. (Note: this resource does not give an in-depth history.) I believe in the science of reading!

A common literacy game is finding the missing letters and sounds. I love Zingo Word Builder and What’s Gnu. However, when my students move beyond CVC words, they still want to play the game! After much wanting, I have made a blend board that can be used with tactile letters of your choosing ( Zingo letters, magnetic alphabet, letter tiles, etc.). Note, only two letter blends are used. This sentence correction activity focuses on early readers/spellers who learn through the science of reading. The corrections are meant to be easy and must be done with an auditory component. The errors will always consist of: beginning capitalization, ending punctuation, and the missing sound. The missing sounds are represented by dashes and correspond to the focused section.
