Description
This is a group activity that helps the student learn how to set up, solve and feel more comfortable with systems word problems. The specific type of word problems that are covered in this activity are the ones that describe two numbers such as "the sum of two numbers is 12. One number is 3 more than the other number".
Students work in groups of 4 and the concept is introduced through a PowerPoint Presentation containing two clues that describe the two numbers. Once the students get the hang of the types of problems and how to work with them, they work on one problem per group.
Each question is divided into 4 steps and each student is responsible for answering one step of the process. They use colored pencils for accountability and pass the paper as they complete the problem. There are 4 problems so that each student works a different step of the process.
