TRICKS and RULES for MULTIPLICATION FACTS!
This is a great tool I use for my kiddos who have difficulty memorizing and need some sort of visual prompt or poem for them to remember how they can find the product.
EACH DAY is devoted to a NEW NUMBER to LEARN!
The order I teach the facts are: 0’s, 1’s, 2’s, 5’s, 4's, 9’s, 3’s, 6’s, 7’s, 8’s By the time my students get to the harder facts, they already know the answers from the rules of other numbers.
I usually start by passing out a blank Multiplications Chart, that they will fill in as we learn our facts.
*I have attached a copy to this packet.
I explain to the class, that we will be filling in this entire chart with numbers! (Insert groans and moans)
It looks like so much work for the students, but as we go, they we see how smart they are by learning the product of each fact. By the end, they are filled with pride for all their learning…
I then pass out our first number page (ZERO) that we will be learning about. We look at the picture and discuss the rule. Once the rule is discussed and we practice answering the facts as a class, the students then begin answering the facts on the adjacent page independently. The column to the right is used for the students to write out the “mirrored” fact and finding that product as well. For example: 8 x 1=8 and 1x 8=8. **This is key for the students to see that the order of multiplying two numbers gets them to the same answer!
For the students that finish early or as homework, I have them decorate/color their number on the page.
Once everyone has completed the facts, as a class we write the products on our Multiplication Chart. Our chart is quickly getting filled, right before their eyes!
***I have scanned in my personal drawings and saved them, along with the entire packet, in a pdf file. If you have any questions or if I could tweak anything, please let me know!
Thank you so much for taking a peek!
