Description

You know what a tag question is, don’t you? (Maybe you call them question tags?) Anyway, tag questions might be tiny, but they do a lot. With them, your adult ESL students can soften a command, seek agreement, check understanding, and invite response. This 15-page grammar guide and worksheet pack builds that confidence from the ground up, covering verb tense agreement, positive/negative balance, and real conversational use.

Tag questions show up in all four language domains: in conversation, in listening comprehension, in reading dialogue, and in writing. This pack treats them that way…not as a grammar footnote, but as a genuine communication tool for students who want to sound more natural in daily life and basic interactions.

WHAT'S INSIDE this 15-page PDF:

✅ Grammar guide — full-color and black & white versions included — covering tag questions in the simple, progressive, and perfect tenses with clear examples students can use

✅ Targeted practice worksheets:

  • Adding the correct tag to statements — worksheet for each (simple, progressive, and perfect tenses)
  • Creating full statements to match given tags; worksheet for each (simple, progressive, and perfect tenses)
  • Writing short dialogues using tag questions in context

✅ Answer keys included (as always)

Easel activities included.

THIS IS DESIGNED FOR YOUR ADULT ESL STUDENTS

Everything here was written with adult students in mind. That means no childish scenarios, no condescending explanations, and nothing that feels like it belongs in a middle school workbook.

That said, the materials work just as well with mature secondary ESL students who need the same solid foundation in tag questions.

I love how you used color to set things off and make it easy to see patterns and differences. I'm wondering why you included many examples for the simple tenses, the progressive tenses, and the perfect tenses, but not the perfect progressive tenses? It seems a little incomplete without them.

That's a good suggestion. I hadn't included it because I think that by the time students reach the stage of using the perfect progressive tenses, they've already mastered tag questions, but I will certainly consider adding those tenses in the future. I'm glad that you like the resource overall.
