Description

Bar models are a crucial component in the Singapore math pedagogy. They provide a pictorial representation of the part-part-whole concept of large numbers and provide students with a strategy to solve multi- digit addition and subtraction problems, including real-world problems.

The task cards included in this product are in alignment with several second grade Common Core State Standards, especially:
2.NBT.7. Add and subtract within 1000, using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction; relate the strategy to a written method. Understand that in adding or subtracting three-digit numbers, one adds or subtracts hundreds and hundreds, tens and tens, ones and ones; and sometimes it is necessary to compose or decompose tens or hundreds.

There are 24 task cards included in this packet. Each task card presents a bar model and instructs students to write a real-world math problem based on the bar model. In order to differentiate by students’ skill level task cards 1 – 8 have models within 100, task cards 9 – 20 have models within 1000, and task cards 21 – 24 have models that have 3 parts equal to the whole. Student instructions along with samples of finished products are also included.

Students’ work may be done on a plain sheet of paper, in a math journal or on the answer sheets provided in this packet.

This was a great activity to use with my students and NOT have them SIT. I would scatter them around classroom and students had to walk around and solve
