Analyzing Quotations and Working towards Effects in the AP and Pre-AP Classroom
Teaching students to discuss and analyze quotations whether in essay body paragraphs, verbally, or in AP rhetorical analysis essays takes SO much practice. This higher-order task requires both critical reading and critical thinking skills. Give students a way to critically think about an author’s rhetorical choices and their effects.
I copy and distribute the "Quotation Explication” handout when
- students will use a particular text for quoted material intended for inclusion as research
- students work towards rhetorical analysis presentations
- we practice critical reading skills in whole-class reads
