Working towards Effects in the AP and Pre-AP Classroom
Are your students prepared to discuss the effects of language features? Help calm student nerves and your own. Add this handout as well as focused thinking into your classroom routine---and EARLY! Give students a way to critically think about an author’s rhetorical choices and the effects.
If both you and your students are already thinking about the AP examination in May---but more importantly, critical reading and connecting an author's rhetorical choices with a deeper comprehension of the text, add this to your lesson plans. Have frequent discussions about rhetorical choices and work on determining which choices are primary. Which choices best contribute to an author’s OVERALL message? Do it in Semester 1. Semester 1 (especially) is filled with students who are a bundle of nerves. Typically, students haven’t been asked to analyze to this level in the past. It’s OKAY. Here’s a way to begin critically thinking about author choices in texts!
You might also want this companion: “Vary Your Verbs & Sentence Structure” and the "Three Essay Types: Structures & Strategies" study sheets, culminating from constant discussions with my students about sentence structures, predictable and stale verbs and those ever illusive big effects!
Another useful way to use these handouts is to copy one for each student and allow them to use them throughout the year as they critically read AND write (in-class and out-of-class) essays throughout the school year! This is a GREAT beginning for students in terms of critical reading OR an extremely useful tool in terms of AP rhetorical analysis test-prep! Teachers can decide when it's used and when it's off limits.
Wondering what next? Begin thinking about the effects (The Big E!) of language use. Check out my Culling Conversationson Cooperative Classroom & Atelier for a discussion about extending the study of grammar and a companion FREEBIE. And while you're there, sign up for upcoming freebies.
