Description

While I don't normally encourage writing as a punishment, this particular assignment is an exception for me. Students are required to hand copy an essay of several paragraphs discussing disruptive behavior and how it takes away from the free education they get in this country (that many other countries do not get). Students have to take ownership for both the negative behavior displayed by writing down everything they did wrong; then they must think of and write down what they will do to make it right and how they will conduct themselves differently in the future.

It does work for many of my students, mainly because it makes them think about their behavior in order to get to participate in certain fun aspects of class again. Most of the time I use this when doing group activities or active lessons. The offending student is required to be isolated until the essay is copied and they seem to repent of their behavior.

Thank you! This is the perfect "lesson" to send with students when they act up and are going to miss the actual lesson.

I left this with a sub for students who did not do the assigned classwork. It worked great and let me know who did not follow instructions.

I use this when students get off task and require more than redirection but I don't want to make a discipline referral. Very effective.

I unfortunately found myself in need of an assignment that would allow me to hold my students accountable for their unacceptable behavior toward one of the best (not to mention one of the very few) substitute teachers who is willing to sub at our school when she is available, which is always a huge saving grace for the teachers whose planning periods would have been spent covering those classes without her being there. That fact only solidified my anger and desire to find some way that I could make her feel like she was appreciated by myself and assured that it would likely never happen again. Luckily, I found exactly what I was looking for when I saw this resource! Thank you so much for sharing this!
