Reading question are in order of the text with recall and inference questions plus answer key. Critical thinking questions have students dig a bit deeper into the text and can be used with the provided paragraph model or as discussion questions. Graphic organizers include KWL, Word Webs, and Cause and Effect with answer keys as appropriate.

Literary Essay: Choice of three literary essays with rubric for use with the story “To Build a Fire” by Jack London. Students will examine the story for specific examples and provide analysis in response to the questions. Includes planning worksheet.

Personal Writing & Multimedia Project: Great for use as an anticipatory set or a concluding project. Includes step-by-step prewriting process and rubrics for both a narrative essay and a multimedia project. Students will be considering a time when they did not heed advice they were given and reflecting on the outcome.

Alternate Ending Project: The narrator makes several mistakes. In this creative writing project, students will create a project that rewrites the ending of the story from one of several possible plot points. Includes options for narrative writing or graphic novel writing with rubrics.

Alternate Point of View Creative Writing Project: Students will write a short story from one of two alternative points of view. They may pick either writing the point of view of the dog or someone who discovers the body. Students will have to decide what details from the text their narrator will know. They will also work to model the style and mood of the original text.

To Build a Fire How To Guide Activity:Students use details and information from the story to create a how-to brochure about traveling in the Yukon. Students will use headings, bullet points or other methods of organization along with appropriate images for their tips. Rubric included.

Character Obituary and Gravestone Writing Activities: Fun project for use with short stories and poems that include a dead character. Can be used as a light-hearted project or for making connections with the text. Includes bonus activity for use with Lake Superior State University’s Banished Word List—make a gravestone and an obituary for an overused, worn out word!

To Build a Fire Word Search (Bundle Only Bonus): Fun activity to go with “To Build a Fire” by Jack London. Word search includes 20 words related to the text. Answer key included.
