Description

The activity includes 40 cards each one showing a number in standard form and in the other side in scientific notation.

The activity focuses on investigating Scientific Notation rewriting each number in decimal form, and applying the general rule to move the decimal point left or right.   

In this activity, the students are not evaluating expressions, just practicing in rephrase the number from standard form into scientific notation. The resulting exponents can be positive or negative. 

Each card shows on its side A a number written in standard form, on side B, the same number is expressed on Scientific Notation. 

The cards can be used as task cards or to do the trading card activity with the instructions included in English and Spanish. 

Use the document as task cards or as "Trading Cards." 

Steps for trading cards activity (optional):

  1. Each student receives one card.
  2. Create a space for students to stand up and be able to walk around the classroom. Ask students to mingle and find a partner.
  3. Ask students to number themselves #1 and #2. Student #1 starts by showing side A to his/her partner. Student #2 answers by applying the rule of exponents. If necessary, student #1 offers clues or hints and positive feedback.
  4. Student #2 repeats the exercise by showing his/her card, and now student #1 answers.
  5. The two students trade cards and go in search of new partners.

This process continues until the time is up.
