Description
Inquiry/ self discovery/ investigation/ notes and general practice. Students will inquire into algebraic rules associated with reflections over the x and y axis, and inquire into algebraic rules for rotations about the origin. As well general notes on translations, reflections, rotations, coordinates, cartesian plane and congruency (in simplest terms). This product guides students through examples to then develop a rule/process for reflection and rotation rules.
If students are being exposed to transformations for the VERY first time this is not the product for them. This product reviews transformations and builds on the initial skills. There is not sufficient practice for students who are seeing transformation for the first time ever. In my curriculum often they learn transformations in the fall of Grade 7, then we use this material at the end of Grade 8. So quite some time has passed.
The topics included are:
* Definitions: congruent, coordinate, parallel lines, perpendicular lines, symmetry, similarity
* drawing examples of some of the above terms
* Cartesian plane and coordinate practice
*Translations
*Reflections
*Rotations
This is an entire unit in the Alberta Math 8 curriculum. This booklet would last approximately 2 weeks ( 6 hours of class time).
