Description

This behavior chart is recommended for school aged children and SDC students. It is a, motivational tool that can be implemented during tabletop and/or carpet activities in order to positively reinforce the behavioral and academic efforts of young students in the classroom.

Students select one of the rewards/privileges that they would like to earn for a designated amount of “minutes,” which can be decided upon by the classroom teacher. Then, the image of the reward is attached to a box on the behavior chart. The visual reminder helps motivate young students to follow directions and stay focused during the tasks, activities, and or behaviors that they frequently struggle with.

The teacher can reinforce positive behaviors and academic efforts by handing students one of the character tokens during tabletop or carpet activities. This can motivate students to continue earning the rest of the tokens as well. The students can then attach the tokens on the behavior chart until all the tokens have been earned. Once a student has earned his/her “minutes”, it is important that the student is immediately given the promised time with their selected reward, privilege, and/or activity.

This chart can be very effective for younger students, however it may take some time before you see results. It is important to remain patient and consistent with your students while utilizing this chart. Make sure to provide positive encouragement and motivation for each child based on their individual needs, until they are able to stay on task independently, make improvements behaviorally, and/or academically.

Some students may require quicker reinforcements and therefore may need to be given less tokens. To encourage these students to do their best, place the extra tokens already on the chart. This can further motivate those students who struggle with particular tasks, activities, and/or behaviors, as they will start off already feeling successful. If you need more support on how to use this behavior chart, we have also created a Behavior Chart Protocol, which can be purchased from our Monkey Mischief Classroom store.
