This is a performance task for students to practice finding the area of a space. It is open ended so that students can practice the skill at their own level. First, the students color code 3 different kinds of trees. They color a space in the grid for each tree type. They multiply the side lengths and find the area of each tree type. Then they add everything to solve how may trees are in their lot altogether. There is also a space for them to explain their thinking and how they solved the problem. The kids loved planning their tree lot and calculating how many trees were in their lot!
