Description

This set of 8th grade math (pre-algebra) binder notes provides guided notes on understanding y-intercepts as it relates to a linear equation. The focus of this lesson is to differentiate between graphs and equations that are proportional or not proportional based on their y-intercept. The notes start with a side-by-side comparison of two very similar word problems, one of which is proportional, and the other is not. This set of problems can guide the discussion. For practice, questions #1-6 are "real-world" scenarios and #7-12 are skills based, all of which will ask students to identify the y-intercept and state whether or not it is proportional.

Graph proportional relationships, interpreting the unit rate as the slope of the graph. Compare two different proportional relationships represented in different ways. For example, compare a distance-time graph to a distance-time equation to determine which of two moving objects has greater speed.
Use similar triangles to explain why the slope m is the same between any two distinct points on a non-vertical line in the coordinate plane; derive the equation š˜ŗ = š˜®š˜¹ for a line through the origin and the equation š˜ŗ = š˜®š˜¹ + š˜£ for a line intercepting the vertical axis at š˜£.
