Using R.A.C.E. to Write an Excellent Short Response (Video Lesson)
Share

Description

Make your life easier! Embedded in this Google Slides presentation is a link to a video lesson that can assist you in teaching the R.A.C.E. writing strategy.

The tips and strategies shared in the video have been successfully used to help middle school students move FROM writing skimpy, inaccurate, and incoherent answers TO writing detailed, accurate, and structured responses to their writing prompts. This technique ensures that students' writing responses will have a clear beginning, middle, and end as well details from the text. This is often a requirement of writing prompts in standardized tests.

This video:

  • Teaches students the skills they will need to write essays and papers beyond middle school and into high school and even college.
  • Is a 46 minute video lesson that breaks down each step of the R.A.C.E. writing strategy and even addresses the most common errors students make when responding to open-ended questions.
  • Has important reading strategies modeled in the video as well, such as making making inferences.
  • Includes a slide with time stamps so teachers and students can easily navigate to skills that need to be reviewed.
  • Is an excellent tool that may help improve your students' writing scores on standardized assessments.

This is not just a how-to video, but an interactive lesson that takes students step-by-step through the process using teacher modeling, a writing prompt, an original poem, the correctly completed paragraph, and finally an original text (a myth) that allows students to practice what they have learned.

These are valuable resources that can be used year after year by the teacher, and the video can be shared with students as well to give them extra support at any time!
