Description
This worksheet is the BEST!!! It shows students a few different things:
1: Electrons always fill the inner-most shell first, then work their way out.
2: 2, 8, 8 electron shell pattern
3: Basic structure of the PTofE
4: Patterns of valence electrons in the PTofE
Don't lecture students on all of these facts; first have them complete this worksheet, then hold a group discussion on the patterns they found. The worksheet takes approximately 1 class period to complete.
Discussion can occur same day or the next day depending on whether they use a pencil or a thick marker (recommended... see below), and how long it takes them in general.
I have included a page with the directions, which I typically put in the blank space on the second page. In the first box, I left a blank page number in case you have a section in your textbook that you would like your students to read before completing the worksheet. If you don't have a section of a book you want them to read, then use the second set of directions. Or you can write you own!
Recommendation: Have students color in (well, just tap) the dots using a thick marker- takes less time and there is significantly less hand hurting by the end of the task (even though hearing the complaints from the students can be entertaining...) ; )

Great resource but some students colored every dot. So next time, I will have them create paper models of each element represented on this worksheet then I will have them follow their models when performing the coloring.
Yes, I agree- for some students, this may be a better follow-up activity than a first-time learning exposure. I have to explicitly teach the first half of the worksheet/activity and walk around to check that students are doing it correctly. I also keep many extras and just swap it out if I notice a student does not do it correctly at first.
I found this by chance while I was looking for something else. It was perfect timing, as my usually very high class was struggling to understand valence electrons. We worked together and filled in "regular" electrons in one color and valence electrons in another. We then discussed how the empty spots left over were available places for electrons and did it make sense to lose or gain to have the complete eight. Some students told me after class that it finally made sense. This saved me time and sanity. Thank you so much!!!
