This was an excellent example of genetic variation. It really drove the concept home. They were surprised at the variability in the seeds.

I did not realize that there is such a wide variety of sunflower seeds.
It is a super simple activity that gets students thinking about how organisms might differ from each other even if we don't really notice. While we are at it students get practice making observations, analyzing larger sample sizes, and graphing! Helpful hint: Bag up the sunflower seeds for each group and use them again next year! Students also love to look at the seeds with magnifying glasses.
