Description

A vertical projectile motion lesson for high school physics with scaffolded fill in the blank notes. Students will learn how to identify knowns and unknowns, make a sketch of the situation, how to choose the correct equation, and how to solve the equation. Students will also learn characteristics of vertical projectiles in this lesson before moving on to horizontal projectiles and projectiles at angle in future lessons. Math review & a scaffolding is in place for students who struggle with complex problem solving skills.

Vocabulary: vertical projectile, free-fall, change in displacement.

Includes: fill-in-the-blank guided student notes, warm-up, exit ticket, homework, and unit pacing guide.

✩ BIG IDEAS OF LESSON ✩

  • All projectiles can be solved using the same methods & equations, but to simplify things while we are first learning about them, we will divide them into vertical, horizontal, and angled projectiles.
  • A vertical projectile is an object that is dropped or thrown upwards in a straight line. The only force acting on it is gravity.
  • To solve vertical projectile problems, we will identify knowns & knowns, make a sketch, pick the equation that has our knowns & knowns, and solve it using algebra.

✩ SPECIAL NOTE✩

  • I teach these lessons using a document camera because I find it to be most engaging for students. I do intend to go back and add PowerPoints to all of these lessons for those who teach with Powerpoint.

✩ Projectile Motion Unit Suggested Pacing ✩

Part 1: Horizontal and Vertical Projectile Motion

Day 1: Introduction to Projectile Motion Stations

Day 2: What is a Projectile? Notes
