Description
In this lab students will study and evaluate blood smears of several human patients, and based on both the patient’s symptoms and appearance of red and white blood cells, they will diagnose them with the correct disease or disorder. Prior to the patient diagnoses, students will read through the virtual hematopathology manual to familiarize themselves with the types of cells found in human blood, as well as with the symptoms associated with each disease. Diseases studied include malaria, pernicious anemia, acute lymphocytic leukemia, sickle-cell anemia, mononucleosis, and a simple bacterial infection. This virtual lab is an excellent activity to use to tie together the study of both the human circulatory system and the human immune system!
Originally designed to cope with a “hybrid” learning environment, these labs are now great for sub plans, absent students, or to be used for home teaching.
The virtual lab can be found at the following link: Virtual Pathology Lab. The lab requires the use of Adobe Flash Player, which as of January 2021 will no longer be supported by Microsoft web browsers. An alternative version of this lab has been created, so teachers and students can still access the lab content. A Google Slides presentation has been created which contains all pages of the hematopathology manual, as well as all eight patient case files, so that students may complete the lab without having to access the web site. The original version of the lab is still included with the purchase of this product, just in case Flash player becomes supported again in the future and this lab can be accessed.
Distance Learning:
The student handout was created specifically for Distance Learning and was formatted using Google Docs. This lab can be easily shared with students through Google Classroom or the use of a Google Drive. Students can type directly on the lab and submit it to you virtually!
