Description

Visual schedules are evidence-based positive behavior support tools that use pictures to communicate information such as sequences of events, daily routines, classroom schedules, and transitions to different activities. These tools reduce anxiety by creating a sense of predictability among young learners and learners with special needs in home, school and community settings. Using visual schedules fosters more independence by offering less intrusive prompting than adult directives or 1:1 support.

Visual schedules can be used during whole group instruction in classrooms and also as individual supports for learners. A large version of the visual schedule can be placed where whole group instruction takes place and reviewed with students at the start of each day. Refer to the schedule often and reinforce students for following the routine. Some students may benefit from individual schedules, which may be placed on the student's desk to facilitate self-monitoring and self-regulation skills.

These materials work best when they are mounted on tagboard, laminated, and have velcro dots placed in each numbered square and on the back of each icon. This method allows for flexibility when there are unexpected changes in the routine, and to maximize durability of materials.

  • 1 Vertical Morning Routine Schedule (6 Steps)
