In this activity, students bring a rock into school that will be used in the Rock Lab. This activity is a good culminating activity to any Rock Unit. They need to have prior knowledge of Sedimentary, Igneous, and Metamorphic Rocks.

The students enjoy analyzing their own personal rock. The lesson has more value to them because it is their rock. During the week of the lab, the students are allowed to build a small home to house their rock prior to the lab. They name their rock and give it human like qualities. Included in the lab is a Rock Bio Creative Writing activity. The students really enjoy this activity. By the end of the week, they have become attached to their rock just in time for the Rock Classification Lab.

Also included is a geology graphic source project!

My students enjoyed using this resource in a work package that I sent home to them as they did not have internet access/devices. I look forward to having another grade 4 class to use this with in the future.
