Word Problem Task Cards: What Operations?

Tired of students guessing solutions without thinking about the information in a word problem? Since these 20 word problem task cards use symbols instead of numbers, the students are forced to figure out the operation instead of guessing how the two numbers might be used. Decide if your students will write just the operation or an expression or equation with the symbols and variables, then play Scoot or a sorting activity.

This 13-page product includes suggestions, Common Core and Virginia SOL alignment, 20 task cards with word problems that can be solved using two operations, operation sort cards, a student response/answer sheet, an answer key, and a credits/usage page. The answer key includes one possible solution.

My kids were having a hard time figuring out what operations to use. This helped get the numbers out of the way so they could focus on key words.

I love the symbols for numbers! It is challenging but allows the students to focus on the events in the word problem and truly understand the operations and why.
