What others say

"You can never have too many word problems in your toolbox! I love using seasonal ones such as these to keep kids interested. Also, the different formats are great because I use them different ways from year to year."

Description

This set of 20 winter word problems help teach multiplication and division word problems in a real world, meaningful way. Pages can be printed, cut into quadrants, and laminated to use as task cards (color version), can be copied on black and white and cut apart to use in math journals, or used DIGITALLY WITH GOOGLE SLIDES!

15 of the problems involve “fact family” numbers or “doubling”. The 5 “starred” problems ask students to reach one level beyond basic facts but can still easily by modeled with manipulatives or drawings. A task card answer key and student worksheet is included.

The Common Core clearly states that students at this age should be able to solve multiplication and division problems in a variety of contexts. Table 2 at the end of the Math Standards gives clear examples of types of problems that students should have experience solving. This set of problems help provide students with that experience.

Standards

Interpret products of whole numbers, e.g., interpret 5 × 7 as the total number of objects in 5 groups of 7 objects each. For example, describe a context in which a total number of objects can be expressed as 5 × 7.
Interpret whole-number quotients of whole numbers, e.g., interpret 56 ÷ 8 as the number of objects in each share when 56 objects are partitioned equally into 8 shares, or as a number of shares when 56 objects are partitioned into equal shares of 8 objects each. For example, describe a context in which a number of shares or a number of groups can be expressed as 56 ÷ 8.
Use multiplication and division within 100 to solve word problems in situations involving equal groups, arrays, and measurement quantities, e.g., by using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.
