Description

Word Problems done right! Problem solving for first and second graders is SO HARD! Help them become better problem solvers, by supporting them in telling their own math stories! What is more relevant and authentic for kids than problems written by kids? (With a little help of course) Designed for first and second grade, and third grade intervention. Learners will move from the Mad Libbing "Fill in the Blank" problems to creating their own stories. (And for those students who do not get there, they can repeat the first two levels again and again with new topics and numbers!)

My First Math Story includes:

  • Level I activities: 4 Fill in the missing ITEMS and solve activities
  • Level II activities: 4 Fill in the missing NUMBERS and solve.
  • Level III: Word problem generator!
  • 90 topic cards
  • 90 number pair cards
  • 30 operations cards (+ and - said in different ways)
  • 60 more cards offering a sum or difference for student to make!
  • 3 Blank card templates/ Student pages
  • 6 Teaching Templates

BONUS:

Google Slides FREEBIE: Go to TheMathViking.com and get "Inspiration Photos for Real World Problem Solving " There are over 100 photos with open level questions that you can edit.

Research shows that students who pose their own math questions are better problem solvers. Children who struggle with reading and writing should still be creating their own problems, even if they simply say them out loud or record themselves. Word problems are a blast if we just let the kids have control of the words! :)

Consider using these regularly in your classroom by cycling this center in and out ALL YEAR LONG! The combinations and stories are different EVERY TIME! And students can create their own topic cards to add to the mix for even more buy in!

Consider using these with my NUMBERLESS word problems. Students simply sort under ADDITION or SUBTRACTION headings.. and then check each other to see if they agree. (Justifying each other's reasoning... pretty high level for our firsties, but it was my favorite lesson of the year! Just sayin:)

Thank you for exploring math with me!
