Description

Are you looking for an engaging and interactive way to teach or provide practice solving addition and subtraction word problems? If yes, then these winter addition and subtraction word problem math story mats with manipulatives and questions are what you need. They are a fabulous aid in helping students understand and visualize the word problems within context.

These mats can help students visualize and understand math problems and provide a concrete model of the math concept being explored. Students who are active in their learning have greater engagement and better long-term comprehension. The best part about word problem story mats is that the students are in control.

This winter addition and subtraction word problem story mat includes five different themed mats. For each theme, there are:

Story mat option 1 – this picture is a great base for students to show their understanding of the word problem by adding the manipulatives to show the addition or subtraction story.

Story mat option 2 – this version of the picture includes a space for students to write the math equation once they have solved the word problem.

4 addition word problems within 10

4 subtraction word problems within 10

2 addition word problems within 20

2 subtraction word problems within 20

Pictures to use as manipulatives, although you can use anything you have in your class such as mini erasers, pompoms, beads, or linking cubes.

Recording sheets to show the word problem in different formats (drawing, number path or number line, and tens frame) for numbers to 10 and 20

The word problem story mats come in 2 options (with and without the equation box) for each theme to extend the use of the mats. You decide if your focus is only showing the answer with the manipulatives, or showing the answer with the manipulatives and writing the equation. To set the mats up, I laminate the equation and non-equation mats back to back so that when my students are ready the page can flipped over, this also allows for differentiation as some students focus on creating and understanding the word problem, others are also writing the numerals to show the problem and answer.

The 5 winter Word Problem Mat themes include:

Artic – with polar bears and fish to place on the ice to solve the word problem

Antarctic – with penguins and seals to place on the ice to solve the word problems

Snowman – with snowmen to place on the snow to solve the word problems

Snow fun – with children to place on the snow to solve the word problems

Winter - with children sledding to place on the snow to solve the word problems

There are 3 options for the questions:

1 problem per page - 6 question strips (perfect for math notebooks),

4 questions per page printable questions, - great to print for the class or use a teacher reference

PowerPoint - perfect for showing the whole class (or can be printed).

The math word problem questions can include:

Joining – result, change, and start unknown

Separating – result, change, and start unknown

Part-Part-Whole – whole unknown, both addends unknown

My students love these word problem story mats! I love that they make solving word problems more concrete and hands on for my students, especially since some have fine motor difficulties and would not be able to draw pictures!
