Description
Many schools have now hit Common Core hard! Through my Common Core Math Trainings, I have learned that Common Core math holds much emphasis on math vocabulary and writing to explain one’s thoughts. I thought it was necessary and imperative to create a quick center that allows students to practice these skills.
How to Implement
I love implementing Guided Math into my Math Block! However the key to success with Guided Math, is to provide fun content-related centers for the other students who are not meeting with me that day. These centers focus on multiplication and division and require students to explain their thinking through writing. Although these are intended for math centers, you may also want to use them for your Guided Math groups. I like to use them in my “Write About Math” Center. I have tried to create an easy set-up. All you need to do is print and cut. No need to laminate— as students will be recording their thoughts directly onto each card. I have my students use a math folder to keep all of their math center contents in until the end of the week when I collect the material. I store the pre-cut cards in a small basket in my math station location! Thanks for checking these out!

CCSS3.OA.A.1
Interpret products of whole numbers, e.g., interpret 5 × 7 as the total number of objects in 5 groups of 7 objects each. For example, describe a context in which a total number of objects can be expressed as 5 × 7.
CCSS3.OA.A.2
Interpret whole-number quotients of whole numbers, e.g., interpret 56 ÷ 8 as the number of objects in each share when 56 objects are partitioned equally into 8 shares, or as a number of shares when 56 objects are partitioned into equal shares of 8 objects each. For example, describe a context in which a number of shares or a number of groups can be expressed as 56 ÷ 8.
CCSS3.OA.A.3
Use multiplication and division within 100 to solve word problems in situations involving equal groups, arrays, and measurement quantities, e.g., by using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.
