Description

This bundle contains 3 genre studies for narrative, persuasive, and informative writing. Each genre study is a 3-day unit designed to help students learn about the characteristics of each type of writing. Students will learn about the defining features of persuasive, narrative, and informative writing.

Students will create an engaging booklet for each genre filled with guided notes. In addition, they’ll develop their craft as writers as they respond to 15 different writing prompts and tasks.

This resource provides a solid and critical foundation for narrative, persuasive, and informative writing.

Great News! The student booklets and the grading guides are also available as Google Slides resources for students. In addition to the PDF versions, students can complete the booklets via a file sharing service such as Google Drive, Google Classroom, or in the internet “cloud.” The digital versions of the booklets are accessible from any computer and allows students to complete their work online.

About the Genre Study Mini-Units:

The mini-units in this bundle are designed to be interactive and versatile. You might use them:

  • As an introduction to a specific writing unit.
  • In combination with a current narrative, persuasive or informative writing unit.
  • With students that need instructional support.
  • In tandem to studies multiple genres at once.

  • Outlining to plan for an informative writing piece
  • Critical components of the genre
  • Transition words and phrases
  • External text features
  • Internal text structures
  • Writing tips – introduction, thesis, conclusion
  • The writing process – pre-write, write, revise, proofread, publish

PERSUASIVE WRITING - Skills and Content

During this Persuasive Writing Genre Study mini-unit, students will learn about…

  • Purpose, audience, and forms of persuasive writing
  • Persuasive writing organization – position, reasons, counter-argument, and conclusion
  • Developing reasons and counterclaims
  • Critical components of the genre
  • Ways to support an opinion
  • Propaganda techniques
  • Pillars of persuasive writing – ethos, logos, pathos
  • The writing process – pre-write, write, revise, proofread, publish
