Description

Do your students struggle with understanding two step equations? These Writing Equations task cards help students see the mathematical operations through models. Each model includes both multiplication and addition for a two step equation. Once students are proficient with writing two-step equations to match the models, they're ready to apply their learning in complex, multi-step word problems.

WHAT'S INCLUDED:

  • 28 task cards
  • Recording sheet
  • answer key

These representations are designed to help students begin to work with two-step equations. Often, we jump right into multi-step word problems in 3rd grade after students have plenty of practice with the operations. But, we don’t spend enough time working on identifying multi-step equations. With these task cards, students practice writing and solving an equation that includes both multiplication and addition. These are also a great opportunity to introduce variables to students. Instead of writing the equation as it’s presented, students can create a rule, using a variable, so a pattern could be continued.

I intentionally left these task cards and the recording sheet somewhat open ended. This allows you to tailor your directions to match your students’ readiness levels. You can have students just identify the missing number write an equation, and/or use a variable.

These task cards are great for:

  • whole class instruction
  • small group instruction- both guided or independent
  • fast finisher extensions
  • high ability extensions

A great extension for these task cards is having students write their own word problems to match the model. This helps students work through the components of a word problem, building their problem solving skills. These task cards are a great bridge to solving multi-step word problems independently.

These task cards are part of my Accessing Algebra line. Accessing Algebra is designed to focus on applying algebraic thinking with our existing standards, giving students the tools they'll need for success later. By looking at the standards in a new way, students build a deeper understanding of the standard while also building their critical and algebraic thinking.

to see state-specific standards (only available in the US).
Interpret products of whole numbers, e.g., interpret 5 × 7 as the total number of objects in 5 groups of 7 objects each. For example, describe a context in which a total number of objects can be expressed as 5 × 7.
Determine the unknown whole number in a multiplication or division equation relating three whole numbers. For example, determine the unknown number that makes the equation true in each of the equations 8 × ? = 48, 5 = __ ÷ 3, 6 × 6 = ?.
Solve two-step word problems using the four operations. Represent these problems using equations with a letter standing for the unknown quantity. Assess the reasonableness of answers using mental computation and estimation strategies including rounding.
