Description

Making words is a hands-on, engaging activity that helps students practice letter sound relationships and common spelling patterns while building vocabulary. Use these colorful, pirate themed phoneme cards with your students to make -tch words and reinforce the -tch spelling when the /ch/ sound comes after a short vowel sound. A word web and a t-chart are included for students to record the -tch words. Making words is a great practice or review activity for independent practice, word work time, reading groups, centers, or interventions. You can differentiate by limiting the number of phoneme cards available at one time.

What’s Included:

  • 10 -tch phoneme cards
  • 23 vowel cards
  • 7 beginning phoneme cards (sn, b, h, p, cr, m, d)
  • Web to record words
  • T-chart to record words

How to use the phoneme cards

1) Separate the phoneme cards into 3 groups– single consonants, vowels, tch.

2) Place the cards face up and spread around a bit (while still keeping in groups) on the table so students can choose the letters they use. This is helpful for beginning or struggling students.

3) Student chooses one card from each group to make a word

Option #1

4) Every student records the word on their own copy of the -tch word web. (You may choose to only record real words on the word web so students can refer to them later).

5) Return the phoneme cards to the correct group, and it is the next student’s turn to choose cards and make a word.

Option #2

4) Say if it is a real word or a nonsense word.

5) Write the word on the correct side of the t-chart. (If you want to make it competitive, each student will have their own copy of the real word/nonsense word T-chart and get points for themselves. The student with the most points at the end of the session, wins. If you want to make it more cooperative, the group records all the words on one T-chart and then tallies up points at the end to see how many points the group earned).

6) Return the phoneme cards to the correct group, and it is the next student’s turn to choose cards and make a word.
