Teaching style

I spent about 17 years in both charter and public school classrooms before I had to "retire" due to medical reasons. Those 17 years were amazing. They were challenging and full of learning. They were joyful and abounding with fun. I had such a blast teaching sixth-grade, and although many are fearful of the big kids down the hall, I think you'll grow to love them just as much as I did. I love to make lessons engaging, hands-on, and interactive for my students. The more students participate, the more they will learn. The more senses involved, the more they remember. I also enjoyed teaching using the Socratic Method. By questioning students, holding discussions, telling stories, and showing connections from the past to the present, students became hooked on my lessons. Lastly, I used many SEL techniques by regularly checking in on my students and their emotions. I am very empathic and can sense when people are upset. I would pull kids aside to talk or send them to a counselor. I also love celebrating students' wins with a variety of awards and certificates I offer in my store today.

Awards & shining teacher moments

🧑🏻‍🏫 Grade Level Leader from 1999 - 2009, and in 2011-2012 🎖️ Member of the Team of the Year in 2006! 🧑🏻‍🏫 Teacher of the Year Nominee in 2000, 2006, 2007. 🎖️ Teacher of the Year in 2007! 🌍 My lessons have been enjoyed by over 50,000 teachers and one million students in over 100 countries!

My own education history

I attended the University of Wisconsin—Milwaukee, where I obtained a Bachelor of Science in Education with a major in secondary education (grades 6-12) and a minor in geography. I taught 6th grade for 17 years and subbed and co-taught for a couple of years in third, fourth, and fifth grade. While working in my first sixth-grade position, where 6th grade was considered elementary, I was asked to obtain an elementary license and certification, which I did. At my second position, I was then asked to gain a middle school license and certification, which I again willingly did. These two moves allowed me to be certified in K-6, 6-8, and 6-12 social studies, all of which were a win-win for me. Education is a joy to me. I love to learn! When I was seven and eight, I had an educator who showed me the joy of learning and the real effects a caring educator could have on their students. I hope to be half the educator she was. Thank you so much, Ms. Lopez!
