This is a chart for students to list and compare cognates. They will read an article in Spanish (even if they don't necessarily understand everything it says) and choose the cognates they see in the article. The chart can be used with any article at all! I have used it with Spanish-language newspapers, for instance. They list cognates in Spanish, then guess the meaning in English. They revisit their answers with a dictionary to confirm correct or incorrect guesses/answers.

Experience
This is my sixth year teaching, and I work in a suburban Phoenix high school.
I have spent my career in the Phoenix metro area in both low-income, struggling schools and more affluent schools.
I have also worked in both one-to-one technology classrooms / schools, and others that barely had a copying machine.
Teaching style
I am a model for my students. That is to say I show my students how to complete a learning task, the I put the responsibility of learning on the students and urge them to take a positive risk to increase their own learning.
I remediate often. Remediation comes by way of simple formative assessments, but also as hard-hitting one-on-one work with students who struggle with particular concepts. I have designed a remediation system based on mastery that I use in my classrooms and place on Google docs. Students go to the Remediation Documents if they score less than 70% on certain assessments.
